King Oyster mushrooms are considered to be one of the finest-tasting gourmet mushrooms available. They are also one of the easiest varieties to grow at home, even if you've never grown mushrooms before. These taste very different from ordinary oyster mushrooms - hence the 'regal' status. Very few shops stock King Oysters, and if you are lucky enough to find them in the shops, they are very expensive. All types of oyster mushrooms are very nutritious, and regular consumption has been shown to help lower cholesterol. This is a high yielding variety producing a brown cap, although the intensity and colour shade will depend on the amount of light the mushrooms receive during maturation. Low temperatures often required to stimulate mushroom production.
